Happy Tails Leia. True kismet helped you blossom into a loving, confident sweetheart...you absolutely deserved your princess fairy tale ending.
Leia came to us from a home overpopulated with 10 dogs. She was a wild card in her time with us. She warmed up to a few volunteers, but was completely aloof and scared to the majority, regardless of treats, toys, and attempts at affection. Leia met 3 potential adopters at the shelter who never were able to even touch her during their extended time with her.
Long time walking shift volunteer Kellee had welcomed her daughter Julia volunteering with us on college breaks and eventually summers off from teaching. From the first time Julia met Leia, there was an instant, unspeakable bond. Leia would melt into her arms immediately and look to her for guidance and direction. She 100% picked her person and made it known. Julia is super recently engaged to her boyfriend now fiance Lucas. The first meet and greet was not great, but upon second meet up, Lucas spent almost 1-1/2 hours patiently and calmly trying to win Leia over. We were in tears when we saw him laying on the shelter office floor winning her over with gentle pets and toys.
Julia and Lucas took Leia home for a few days' sleepover to see how she would be with their giant 1 year old cat Lucas (he's a solid 15lbs outweighing Leia greatly) and their frequent influx of visits from their family and friends. Leia did nothing short of amazing. Lots of patience and practice with comings and goings with treats and positive interactions with the kitty. Leia and Marty became fast friends and Leia is doing amazing greeting new visitors (human and canine) and going on adventures with her new mom, dad, and even with her new grandma and grandpa!
We learned that when Julia first met Leia and walked into her pen, with Leia wide eyed and plastered up against the corners of the pen's walls, Julia softly whispered to Leia, "I'm going to be your mom." Like a fulfilled prophecy. We're not crying, you're crying...
