In January 2026, the good people at USA Waste in East Windsor heard sounds coming from behind their walls. When they went up to their partially finished attic to see if they could figure out what was going on, they found evidence that a cat had been living there. Worried, they cut holes in their walls and used a camera to see inside. What they found was two small kittens, one on each side of the doorway!
Apparently a feral mom had found a way into the building and had her kittens in the attic where it felt warm and safe. Mom was able to leave to hunt and come back to nurse the kitttens. But at some point as the kittens got older they went exploring and fell through the insulation and were trapped behind the walls!
After safely rescuing the kittens they reached out to Protectors of Animals. Our volunteers got the kittens checked out medically (they were fine) and to a foster home. Their foster mom decided to name them Butch and Sundance- because they were the Hole in the Wall Gang.
The employees later heard and rescued two more kittens from behind the walls. One of the kittens was much smaller than her siblings, and despite all of our efforts she did not make it. Kittens are terrifyingly fragile. We comfort ourselves by knowing that she was warm, fed, held, and comforted in her foster home. She was loved and she was not alone.
The other kitten, a boy, was reunited with his siblings and named Cassidy. These three are eating and growing and doing very well. They aren’t yet ready for adoption, but they are safe. And we will find them homes when they are ready.
