Blossom's Happy Tail Image
Blossom came to POA back in April. She was living outside as a stray cat, and was picked up as part of Protectors of Animals’ TNR (trap, neuter, return) efforts.  But our TNR team could tell she had been somebody’s cat once. She didn’t want to be outside. So we took her in and after a short stint in a foster home, she became one of the shelter cats.

Blossom had picked up giardia while outside and when she first arrived, she had to spend a fair amount of time in her condo while she was treated. She didn’t love that. She wasn’t too trusting of hands when she arrived either. She liked to be around people and loved to play, but she made it clear that we would have to earn her trust. She wasn’t great with other cats who challenged her. And she could be spicy. In short, Blossom was a lot.

As time went by, we saw Blossom grow more and more affectionate. She was quirky and goofy and stole our hearts. We saw how amazing she was. But we saw her get passed over week after week. Either there were too many cats in the home, or small kids, or it simply wasn’t a match. She was adopted once but returned quickly. Nobody’s fault, it just wasn’t a good fit.

Lots of people came in to meet Blossom, but left with a different cat. She was just a little too much for them. And Blossom‘s attitude towards those potential adopters could pretty much be summed up by the phrase, “if you think I’m too much, go find less”.

Then, in October, someone came in to meet Blossom and something amazing happened. Blossom climbed into this woman’s lap and kissed her face! This was something Blossom had NEVER done with a stranger (and rarely with the volunteers she knew). It was clear that Blossom had made her choice. She went home that day.

Now, we aren’t saying that it was immediately perfect. Blossom is not good with change. But her adopter understood that. And within days Blossom was running to greet her person when she got home from work, meowing happily, and asking for pets (and dinner). Her adopter reports that Blossom loves her cat tower and sleeping on big soft blankets. It was also clear to us that Blossom loves her person and that the feeling is mutual.

We couldn’t say it better than her adopter did, so we won’t even try. She told us, “I am so happy she chose me… She makes me smile and laugh daily and I never realized how much I needed her as she seemingly needed me. Turns out - all she wanted was some patience, gentleness, and some time to build trust and routine- with lots of love, reassurance, and encouragement sprinkled in.”
